ART LICENSING FAQS

WHAT IS ART LICENSING?

A licensing agreement is what grants you permission to use my artwork on your products. The copyright for the artwork would still belong to me, you are essentially renting it. Some companies have in-house designers to make their products come to life. Other companies purchase patterns from independent surface designers, like me. A surface designer typically licenses their artwork to a company for either a flat fee or royalties.

WHAT IS AN EXCLUSIVE LICENSE?

An exclusive license is category specific to your product type, and a good option to give your product a competitive edge. Competitors cannot license the same design during your licensing term. I retain full copyright of the design and once the licensing term is over, I have full use of the design again. At the end of the term, if you choose not to re-license the design, the right to use the design reverts back to me as the designer.

WHAT IS AN NON-EXCLUSIVE LICENSE?

A non-exclusive license is where you choose an existing design from my portfolio to be manufactured by the printer of your choice, and sold as finished goods in one category. The design may also be licensed non-exclusively to other companies at the same time. I retain the copyright.
